Intertidal

The strip the sea uncovers and covers with every tide. Species are distributed across different levels according to their tolerance of air exposure, waves, humidity and other environmental conditions.

Beaches

They look empty, but crustaceans and other invertebrates live beneath the sand, distributed according to moisture and sediment type. Many of the birds that work the shoreline feed on them.

Cliffs

Rock walls where the continent drops sheer into the sea. Ledges and crevices give seabirds somewhere to nest, and constant wind and salt select for a flora unlike the rest of the coast.

Wetlands

Lagoons, estuaries, meadows and freshwater or brackish watercourses. They filter sediment, regulate floods and concentrate a diversity of birds hard to find anywhere else in the territory.

Native forest

Peumo, boldo and quillay, with hard, glossy leaves adapted to long dry summers. They are part of one of the most endemic and most threatened zones on the planet.

Ravines

Narrow and shaded, they hold the moisture the rest of the landscape loses in summer. They are both refuge and corridor towards the interior.
