Wildlife monitoring and research
We record which wildlife lives in the territory, where, and at what time of year.
What we do
We record and monitor different groups of wildlife: small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and arthropods. We reserve the term population monitoring for projects with a design that genuinely allows for it. Much of the territory still has no systematic, publicly accessible records of its wildlife. This area exists to help close that gap with data another team could review and repeat.
Methods
Camera traps
Systematic camera-trap monitoring can provide information on presence, use of space and activity patterns of different species, always taking sampling effort and design into account.
Direct sampling
We carry out transects and sampling with defined protocols to record presence, distribution and, where the study design allows it, relative abundance indicators or other comparable metrics. We repeat the same points between seasons so the data can be compared.
Taxonomic identification
We determine which species each record corresponds to using keys and specialised literature. Whether the data is of any use depends on this step.
Collections
Where appropriate, we check identifications against specialists, literature and scientific collections, and collaborate with authorised institutions for the study and documentation of reference material.
What it produces
Wildlife records systematised by site and season, confirmed species lists for the territory, and baselines that are updated with every field campaign.
